Formal cooperation between the Vosges du Nord Regional Park and the Pfälzerwald Park started in 1985.
|
| |
It covered an exchange of information, of school students,
coordination in protecting nature and encouraging cross-border
tourism; this cooperation however remained more a diplomatic
than a practical agreement. Information panels were
installed along the border and teacher exchanges started.
In 1989, the Vosges du Nord Regional Park was designated
a biosphere reserve, as was the Pfälzerwald Park
in 1992. When UNESCO recommended the creation of a cross-border
biosphere in 1993, cross-border projects really started.
Following a joint request from the two biosphere reserves,
UNESCO formally inaugurated the Vosges du Nord-Pfälzerwald
Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve in December 1998.
