Its origin       How it came to be set up
Formal cooperation between the Vosges du Nord Regional Park and the Pfälzerwald Park started in 1985.

It covered an exchange of information, of school students, coordination in protecting nature and encouraging cross-border tourism; this cooperation however remained more a diplomatic than a practical agreement. Information panels were installed along the border and teacher exchanges started. In 1989, the Vosges du Nord Regional Park was designated a biosphere reserve, as was the Pfälzerwald Park in 1992. When UNESCO recommended the creation of a cross-border biosphere in 1993, cross-border projects really started. Following a joint request from the two biosphere reserves, UNESCO formally inaugurated the Vosges du Nord-Pfälzerwald Transfrontier Biosphere Reserve in December 1998.
