Zoning

To date the Vosges du Nord and Pfälzerwald Parks have organised their zoning without any coordination between them, but a joint working party has been set up to discuss the matter. On the French side the Cooperation Syndicate is responsible for zoning the Vosges du Nord Regional Park; on the German side, the Pfälzerwald zoning is decided by the Rheinland-Pfalz Ministry for the Environment and Forestry.

In Vosges du Nord, the following zones have been established:
- core areas spread over the Park as a whole (protected or to be protected sites),
- a buffer zone consisting mainly of forest and valleys,
- a transition area with villages and other human activities.

In Pfälzerwald, the following zones are planned:
- core areas, consisting of existing and planned forest reserves,
- a buffer zone covering the central part of the Pfälzerwald forests,
- a transition area of built-up areas with the edge of the forested zone.

The core areas are those containing major elements of our regional heritage whose long-term protection is considered essential. The buffer zones contain elements that form part of the regional heritage that are used in human activities and whose protection should not adversely affect these activities. The (transition or) cooperative areas are those destined for human use or occupation while duly respecting the environment.

"A general map showing the various zones throughout the territory will be posted and updated on the website in due course."
