The INTERREG programs are financial tools used by the European Union to encourage cross-border cooperation. The two Reserves both put the INTERREG I programs into action from 1993 to 1996 and the INTERREG II programs from 1997 to 2000. The two Reserves have also, since 1995, been given support under the EU's LIFE Program for the development of a joint database on their natural resources using a geographical data system.
