Lofts of buildings and ruined castles

For some fauna, the lofts of buildings are the equivalent of caves. Bats are amongst the species to be found there. These include the Greater Long-eared Bat (Myotis myotis), the Grey Long-eared Bat…,

A number of feudal castles, virtually part of the rock on which they are built, have acquired an interesting biological heritage.

A number of ornamental and medicinal plants grow there as do many plants for human consumption that escaped from the medieval gardens that used to surround the castles. Thus we find, in no particular order, periwinkles, gooseberries, baneberries, greater celandine, feverfew, and sempervivum.

The castles are also often home to Black Redstarts, White Wagtails, Jackdaws (on the Fortress of Bitche), the Lesser Kestrel and on occasion the Peregrine.
