Oak forests

Natural oak forests are to be found in the sandstone basins in the Bitche area where the poor quality soil is sandier. Two species of oak grow in the RBT: the Chestnut Oak which prefers dry soil and the Common Oak (Q. robur), which thrives in damp soil.

The most pervasive trees and plants are Mountain Ash, Wood Germander (Teucrium scorodonia), cow wheat (Melanpyrum pratense), hair grass, bracken, ling or Scotch heather and the common bilberry.

Amongst the fauna, the Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Drendocopos medius)
