The Parc naturel régional des Vosges du Nord and the Naturpark Pfälzerwald are in a region with its own very strong local identity. They offer a fascinating range of cultural visits exploring popular art and tradition in the area.

Amongst particular aspects of this culture that is both timeless and yet always adapting, one can choose to explore a range of very different subjects but which always have a close relationship with the area's history and the symbolism that is ever-present throughout the Biosphere Reserve.

To better understand the people of the area and appreciate the beauty of its outstanding natural scenery, you should discover the local rural architecture with its wood-frame buildings, take part in a few ceremonies, see the traditional costumes and their variants, Kelsch weaving, the production of hemp and linen, the craft manufacture of brushes and of shingle in Ramberg, the charcoal-burners and charcoal-burners' fairs in Trippstadt, the wine fairs on the edge of the Haardt (the sausage market in Bad Dürkheim), Elwetritsch, the legendary animal, popular imagery through baptism wishes, Wentzel's lithographs, Pays de Hanau polychrome furniture, and decorated objects in everyday use made of glazed Soufflenheim clay or Betschdorf earthenware.

The museums and sites in the Reserve help explain the costumes, beliefs and practices which, even though they are specific to the area, will prove strangely familiar. In your wanderings through the Reserve you will discover that most of these traditions and skills are still very much alive thanks to generations of craftsmen and inhabitants who are still closely attached to them.
