The "Man and the Biosphere" Committee

In March 2000, Jürgen Trittin, Federal Minister for the Environment, reorganised the German Committee for the UNESCO Program: "Man and the Biosphere" (MAB). The German MAB Committee consists of 14 personalities from the scientific and business worlds. The designated experts all have the required experience in the various subjects that comprise the MAB program. The Federal Minister for the Environment will chair the Committee which will be run by the Federal Office for the Protection of Nature.

The newly appointed National Committee will, as set out in the relevant UNESCO decisions, concentrate on the following subjects:

Future changes in the "biosphere reserve as model landscape" concept,
Long term administration of biosphere reserves,
Maintenance of and increase in biological diversity,
Use of biosphere reserves as teaching environments for training in ecology.

The national MAB Committee has already held two meetings; a working group has been formed to make an immediate assessment of the German biosphere reserves designated by UNESCO ten years ago; some 14 reserves have been designated in Germany to date.

In November 2000 Germany was appointed Vice-President of the International Coordinating Committee (ICC) and is playing a very active role in EUROMAB.
