A public body is often appointed to handle a biosphere
reserve. It will normally nominate a Management Committee
that will bring together all those active in the area:
elected representatives, government departments, professional
organisations, associations... It will be assisted by
a scientific and technical committee. The organisation
appointed to handle the biosphere reserve will be primarily
concerned with providing information, negotiating and
coordinating the efforts of the various local bodies.
In fact a great many local groups and other organisations
have an interest in the reserve: farmers, forestry workers,
hunters, fishermen, public service providers, municipalities,
visitors..., and their interests are on occasion in
opposition. The coordinating body thus plays the essential
role of ensuring the harmonious development of the territory.

Considerable latitude is allowed in choosing the type
of coordinating body provided it can fulfil its new functions
and international responsibilities.
