How it works
|
| |
To be
managed correctly a biosphere reserve needs a formal structure
including a management committee and a scientific council.
The specific characteristic of biosphere reserves is the
zoning system which provides for a transition area where
human activity takes place, a buffer zone, and a core
area, a genuine laboratory of human activities compatible
with the preservation of nature.
How an area becomes a biosphere reserve ?
To become a biosphere reserve a territory has
to go through a rigorous selection process. An initial
file is prepared dealing with a number of parameters:
a presentation of the various species and landscapes
worth protecting, an analysis of the various types of
human activity, the existence of scientific programs
and a suitable coordinating body, and finally formal
approval by representatives of the local population.
The file is examined by UNESCO's MAB executives (Ecological
Science Division). Once officially designated, biosphere
reserves are reviewed every ten years.
