Biodiversity deals not only with species diversity but also

WORKING GROUP BIODIVERSITY OF THE "VOSGES
DU NORD - PFÄLZERWALD" TRANSBOUNDARY BIOSPHERE RESERVE
Biodiversity
Concerning the international convention on biodiversity 1992 in
RIO the maintenance and enhancement of biodiversity is worldwide
of great importance.
The term biological diversity (synonym biodiversity) encompasses
not only the species diversity but also the genetic diversity and
the diversity of the habitats.
A comprehensive view of biodiversity has to incorporate the composition
and structure of ecosystems and the abiotic influences like wind
and fire as well as the connections to the ecosystem processes in
terms of nutrient and energy fluxes.
Biosphere reserves are regarded as outstanding examples for the
conservation of biological diversity.
In the focal point is the question: How can the maintenance of biological
resources be reconciled with their sustainable use?
Tasks of biosphere reserves
The following tasks of biosphere reserves have to be kept in mind:
- Monitoring of flora and fauna within the framework of ´ecological
environmental monitoring´
- Compiling methods for monitoring and assessing biodiversity
- Applied research in the field of biodiversity development
- Contribution to international and national environmental reporting
- In-situ preservation and use of genetic resources

Besides concrete actions and projects, the work of the group aims
at initiating and conducting scientific projects
MAIN TOPICS
The following main topics should be picked up:
- Identifying potential indicators (e.g. indicator species, habitat
structures) for monitoring, assessing and survey of biodiversity
dynamics
- Research in terms of genetic variation, especially tree species
and wildlife species
- Investigation of the effects of anthropogenic immissions (e.g.
acid and nitrogen immissions) on biological diversity
CURRENT ACTIVITIES
Currently the following informations are supplied:
- create an address list with species specialists for flora and
fauna
- create a list with floristic and faunistic species for which the
transboundary biosphere reserve is responsible in terms of conservation
and monitoring of biodiversity
- Overview of ongoing, completed and foreseen projects in the field
of biodiversity
YOUR OPINION
Your opinion to the topic "biodiversity in the
biosphere reserve" is very welcome!
We would appreciate ideas, comments and contributions concerning
questions about biodiversity in the biosphere reserve "Pfälzerwald-Vosges
du Nord".
